I dump the cartons onto Meg’s counter and push them toward him.

“Two years until they expire, and all still in their packaging, ready for easy delivery.”

The trader flashes his renowned smile at me.

“Like clockwork, Seb. You sure they’re not going to catch you one of these days?”

I wave his comment off. “I don’t do anything clockwork apart from delivering to you, Megawatt. If they ever catch me, I’ll know exactly who to come for when I escape.”

His smile beams at me again. “Wouldn’t dream of turning you in. My kid needs this shit as much as the others I on-sell to, and you’re the only steady supply in this bug-infested universe. Well, you and the Alliance you steal from, but they prioritize their soldiers.”

I shrug. “They’ve got plenty of medicine. And as you say, there’s kids who need it. They shouldn’t suffer just because those assholes are too stupid to realize where their next soldiers are coming from. Who knows how long this war will go on? They’re so busy fighting the swarms they haven’t even found the hive yet.”

Meg stares at me. Checking over his shoulder, he stands on his toes and peers around me to make sure his little storefront is empty.

“Any ideas where it might be?”

I shrug as if I could care less. “Someplace well-guarded, I guess. Probably infested with fleas and shit. No place I want to be.”

He leans in closer.

“I heard a rumor.”

I lean in closer too, meeting his eyes.

“It was just a rumor, Meg. If you care anything for those kids of yours, you’ll drop it. Even thinking about that shit will make it rain down upon you. You hear me? Stay out of it, and leave the war to the fuckers with the big guns.”

The lump in his throat bobs as he swallows hard and nods. “Okay, Seb.”

I nod too, then fish a human candy bar from my pocket.

“For your kid,” I explain as I slide it over the counter. “I happened to acquire one of my own recently. She goes nuts for this stuff, but the nanny says she’s not allowed candy. I’m pretty sure she only says that so she can eat more of them. She goes a little nuts for them too — the nanny that is. She pretends she doesn’t, but if you saw her eat one, you’d know it. This is the last one, and I kind of want to piss her off, so I think you should take it.”

Meg snorts softly and smiles as he takes the wrapped chocolate.

“Congrats on the fatherhood situation.”

I rock up onto my toes, unable to help my smile. “Thank you. It’s quite new, but most of the time I enjoy it very much.”

The trader’s nose wrinkles. “I hear ya. Makes your heart full of both love and fear all at once, right?”

My smile fades.

“It really fucking does, Meg.”

He grunts. “Torture, isn’t it?”

“Yeah.”

“Your heart’s big enough to cope. You’ll do fine. Got anything else for the kids?” he asks, tapping the cartons in front of him.
